Loons and crazies: or, G. W. Bush’s plan to take over the U. S.
By: Jose A. Colon
A lady said in talk radio today that by the end of this year, President Bush would declare an emergency, take over the Nation, and abolish the Constitution of the good old United States of America.
Upon some quick research, the radio host came up with a few web sites that supported this lady’s claim. A chill ran through the host and my back. And when I made it to my house, quickly found those same web sites.
What have some people in an uproar is the “John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007” (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s109-2766&tab=summary. 6 February 2008.) or: H.R.5122, Subtitle E - Defense Against Terrorism and Related Security Matters, Section 1042 – wich:
“Revises federal provisions allowing the President to utilize the Armed Forces in connection with interference with federal and state law to allow the President to employ the Armed Forces and National Guard in federal service to restore public order in cases of natural disaster, epidemic or other public health emergency, terrorist attack or incident, or domestic violence. Requires the President to notify Congress within 14 days of the exercise of such authority. Authorizes the President, when exercising such authority, to direct the Secretary to provide supplies, services, and equipment to persons affected by the situation.”
This Senate Bill passed with 96 Ayes, no Nays, and 4 Abstentions. 42 of those votes were Democrat Senators, 53 Republicans and one independent. So in other words, it was a bipartisan effort (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/vote.xpd?vote=s2006-186. 6 Feb 2008).
For some reason, some people are worried that President Bush will imitate the actions of President Pervez Muscharaf and declare martial law, thus going above the powers stated in the Constitution and replacing our democracy with a military government.
After careful consideration, I have to say that in this world anything is possible. But the bottom line is that President Bush has gone out of his way to promote the blessings of Democratic Government to the world. Like it or not, respect him or not, one thing is clear when we are talking about President Bush: he means what he says and says what he beliefs.
We have the strongest Democracy in the world. Our founder fathers established the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of Government in order to prevent any one Branch from having too much power. It is the first line of the Constitution who gives me all reassurances I need about our Government: “We the people…” when I think that our Nation is in trouble, I go back to it and realize that as long as we remain vigilant, we can and we will overcome all adversities. The primaries this year are an example of what can happen when our Nation wakes up and participates in the electoral process. Politicians will be politicians no matter what, but as long as we do our part, and we think with our heads, we can see them coming. Just remember Paul Revere and his historic cavalcade in the middle of the night. Each one of us has a part to play. Our job is to keep our politicians honest. Sometimes we do a better job than others. It is 2008. we have a job to do. Get out and vote.
