Heroes among us

by: J. A. Colon

Someone said that society is made of 98% sheep and one percent wolves. I agree with him. Most of society is just happy to be lead by the nose without ever thinking what dangers are around the corner. As a defense mechanism, we tend to block away bad news, we tend to belief that bad news happen to everybody else, but when they happen to us, we can not believe it. And the sheep are scared of the wolves. Oh, how they tremble when they hear the howling. There is a chilling feeling that starts on the base of the skull and goes down the spine when we hear the pack and realize that they are getting closer.

Oh, wait. That wise man said that society was 98% sheep and 1% wolves. That makes 99%. We are missing something.

Did you notice in the video of New York City on September 11, 2001 how almost everybody was running away from the World Trade Center? Did you noticed, how scared everyone was? But did you notice that there were some who were going against the sea of people running toward the falling towers? What was wrong with them?

Let’s see, it is easy to realize who the sheep were. And no, I am not putting them down. Fear is normal and healthy. It keeps us alive, and we have to consider that if you die, who will care for your children and the elderly? It is important that you survive. There is nothing wrong with the thousands who rushed to safety.

What about the terrorist that commandeer the planes and killed so many of our friends and families? Those are the wolves that feed on fear and death. Those are the ones who kill indiscriminately under the pretense of reasons that many can relate to. Under the guise of religion, of social justice, of righteousness, they hurt, maim and kill the innocent sheep that goes about their business not expecting the calamities around the corner.

In almost every disaster, there are those who rush toward ground zero. It is not that they are not afraid. It is not that they are insane. It is not that there is faulty wiring in their brains. On the contrary, their wiring is done correctly. Those are the sheep dogs who, misunderstood by the sheep, risk their lives to protect the defenseless. Those are the firefighters and police officers who rushed the stairwells of the World Trade Center to rescue the remainder of people trapped inside. Those are the likes of the female security officer who at the New Life Church in Colorado rushed the shooter even though she was outgunned. They are the police officers like the one in the Utah mall that while attempting to have dinner with his significant other, heard shots fired and immediately rushed the assailant saving countless lives.

I am a Soldier. I am one of those sheep dogs. The sheep fear those who are charged with their protection. There are some in the community who fear and even hate the sheep dogs. Look at the protesters in California who “camp in front of the Marines Recruiting Station” just because they do not like them. Or how about those Hollywood activists who defend, praise, and idolize the likes of Mumia who, in cold blood, killed a courageous police officer. They go as far as allowing him to have his own talk show and reap the benefits of writing a book.

But, how about the crooked cops, or, the psychopathic Soldier? Those were never sheep dogs. Those were wolves in disguise. And for every one of those, thousand more serve their cause with honor and courage.

Like my beloved wife likes to remind me, “ignorance is bliss”. We can only hope that more sheep wake up and realize that those Law Enforcement Agents, CIA men and women, those in the Military, or the Border Patrol Officers, they get up every morning and put on a uniform and go out risking their life’s to protect the innocent or the defenseless. They do it because is the right thing to do. They show uncommon valor and honor in their service. And when one of them falls, is like we lost a brother or a sister.

Let’s render honor to my brothers and sisters in arms, whether they are police officers, or firefighters; military, or security, Border Patrol, or DEA. All of them are there to serve and protect. You might never know how it feels to get up in the morning and while getting dress come to the understanding that you might not come home again, or be crippled in the pursuant of your duties.

Brothers and sisters, I salute you.

Proud to be an American

http://thinkingamerican.blogtownhall.com/

A long time ago, before cell phones, DVDs, CDs, and even before Beta video recorders, a man challenged the imagination of the United States to achieve what could be considered “an impossible dream”. His name was Martin Luther King, and his challenge was in the form of a speech in which he described his dream that we all live together in harmony. Today, even though we are not perfect, schools are integrated, black and whites work together for the common good of our Nation, and the first viable African-American candidate for President is winning the primaries with a majority of votes from whites.

A few years later, another great man, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, challenged our Nation to another “impossible dream”, He challenged the United States to put the first man on the moon. I remember, while still living in the mountains of Puerto Rico, watching an old black and white TV with rabbit ears. I was ten at the time, that night, a lunar module from an Apollo mission, landed on the moon, and a very proud man pronounced the immortal words: “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” (Neil Armstrong). I remember thinking to myself, how is he going to get back to Earth?

Fast forward in time and an actor turned politician raised the hopes of our Nation with his “shinning city on top of the hill” analogy.. Later on, he challenged the Soviet Union with these words “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” (http://www.reaganfoundation.org/reagan/speeches/wall.asp%2020%20February%202008)
On the 9th of November 1989 I was in Hoenfehls, Germany participating in a military exercise when the Berlin Wall came down. The Cold War was soon declared over.

On December 1989 I boarded a military transport that landed in the city of Daman, Saudi Arabia. Images of the back of the plane filling with smoke come to mind, we all rushed out of the plane fearing that burning inside the plane, while at the same time, slowly realizing that we had just landed in the Middle East. While the world was celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Middle East was trying to figure out a character that seemed to come out of a comic book. He thought that he could travel down from his country and take over Kuwait. My friend Tarek told me that he was ten at the time, and he was happy because the schools were closed. But when he made it home, he found his father gone. For almost a year he thought his father had being killed by the Iraqi troops. They ransacked the riches of the country, tried to destroy local monuments, even today if you go to the Kuwaiti Towers, you can see pictures on the wall of the damage inflicted and the hard work to reconstruct them. Today, they stand proud and tall. Along with my brothers and sisters of the United States Army, the French Army, the Egyptian Army, and many others, our coalition took on Saddam Hussein’s Army, and forced him back to his own country, effectively liberating the country of Kuwait, and preventing him from invading Saudi Arabia next.

On September 11, 2001, like many other Americans, and citizens of the world, I cried when terrorist infiltrated our land and brilliantly but cowardly executed the plan that destroyed the World Trade Center. And I was one of millions that wanted to show that our Nation would not capitulate because of some people that were stock in the 17th century and refused to join the modern world. I was proud of our Nation’s response. We were brothers and sisters united.

A few months later, and even though many think that the only reason we (the U.S. Army) went to Iraq was to try to find weapons of mass destruction, that was only one of the few reasons we went (H. J. Res 114: Armed Forces Against Iraq) we flew over to the Middle East and deposed another dictator.

In 2005, I was in the city of Tal’Afar when Iraq had the opportunity, for the first time in decades, to freely elect their officials. At 6:00 a.m. over 900 Iraqis were lined up in one of the polling stations even though Al-Qaida had threatened violence on those who dared vote. That alone let me know that our cause was just.

What does all of this ranting proof? That I’m old? Maybe. But in 48 years on this Earth, and being an American, I have seen history happen; I have been a part of history while it was happening, and I can say that I have been proud of our Nation, of our people, of our courage. I might not be proud of some of our politicians, but I am proud of our Democracy. It is ok to be proud of our Nation.

We are not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. We still have a long way to go. But Rome was not built in one day. Our Nation is in its infancy. We continue to go forward. If we continue following our heart, guided by our principles, and governed by our Constitution, we will be ok.

Law enforcement and our politicians…

http://www.helium.com/tm/872259/primary-duties-government-should

One of the primary duties of government should be to secure and or protect their population. If they cannot do this, they shouldn’t have the authority they have.

Not that many American citizens realize that about half of their political candidates or people in positions of power hate authority. They love power, but hate any type of authority that tells them they cannot do something.

I have a friend whom I consider a great person. But deep down, he hates policemen. He sees them as those who use their power to keep him down. I do agree that absolute power thus corrupt absolutely, but that does not mean that power is evil. Power in the hands of people who respect the Constitution of the United States, in my opinion is a good thing.

When kids and teenagers challenge authority, it is considered normal. When adults do it however, is a sign of immaturity and maybe, just maybe, that they are not suited to govern a nation so powerful as the United States.

Those are strong words. But lets see, in order for a Nation to function without a hitch, it needs laws. Those laws need to be enforced. Otherwise, we have anarchy, the rights of the individual are not protected, and then we have the crazy blind leading the idiot. So we need law enforcement agencies. I’d venture to say that most of those who do not like law enforcement agents, are hiding something, doing something against the law, or would rather live in a lawless state. Either way, they do not belong governing a nation.

At this time I do need to do a disclaimer. I believe that not everybody that calls himself or herself a Democrat falls within this category. I also believe that we have a few of those within the Republican Party. There are law-abiding democrats and they are, without question, just as much a patriot as I am. But I do belief that in every group, a small percentage of such groups go against most established societal norms. Those are the ones who reject the law and law enforcement agencies and agents. Those are also the ones who would do anything to tie the hands of every law enforcement agency they can.

Unfortunately, some of those people make it to positions of power. And we have plenty of them in Congress.

Take for example The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). We have the technology and the ability to intercept and listen in communications between people in the United States of America and known terrorists. We had, past tense, a law that allowed intelligence agencies to track those calls and possibly, stop such creeps from perpetrating terrorist acts. And what does Congress do? They let it expire, leaving our intelligence agencies without the capabilities of finding and tracking the enemies of our land. And those are the people that want to govern our Nation? Faced between working late and leaving for the weekend without finishing my job, I would finish my job; otherwise I would be severely chastised and even disciplined. Congress just goes home living our nation with one less tool to protect it.

All I’m saying is that a Democrat controlled Congress scares the heck out of me. Look at the choices they make. Go home and allow an important bill to expire. What is their priority? They swore to uphold the Constitution and to protect our Nation. Are they really doing this?

Is Senator Clinton any better? She opposes licensing illegals not because is the right thing to do, but because it would expose them to law enforcement agencies. Is that what a patriot would do?

Lets keep our perspective. How about the people that put two Border Patrol Agents in jail for shooting an illegal drug-carrying dealer in the butt. The excuse used by the agency to put these officers in jail is akin to “the dog ate my homework”. This guy, the drug dealer, has being seen carrying more drug shipments into the United States. And our border agents are still in jail.

I really do not care who does what, whether Democrat or Republican, if they do not respect our laws, protect our sovereignty, and defend our Constitution, they don’t belong on the Halls of our Democratic Government.

The Clintons never really respected our military; Madam Speaker of the House Pelosi has not shown any respect to our military either. She allows Congress to go in a hiatus allowing important legislation expire. The ones who promised to bring transparency to our Government are the ones who claim Congressman Jefferson (he was found by the FBI with $90k in the freezer) as one of their own. To be fair, Senator Obama had claimed his share of $91 million dollars in earmarks too. They are the same who wouldn’t prosecute Sandy Berger who stole classified documents and downplayed his actions. Well, lets remember these instances when is the people’s turn to speak out and vote.

“We the people…” have the right to vote against those who would not protect our Nation.

The lack of credibility of the press;or, Objectivity, the lost gift

http://journals.aol.com/jcolon710/personal-discovery-/

Reporters, as I understand it, are supposed to maintain objectivity. That is one of my greatest weaknesses. I have to fight hard daily to center myself and be an objective person. Even though I have very strong opinions on almost everything, I do attempt to put myself in the other person’s shoes. Some call that empathy, and is hard because at times, you really do not want to see the other side of the story.

Take for example, the apparent disdain that most Americans feel for President Bush. He has being trashed and his reputations dragged in the mud because most people cannot see pass their eyeglasses. Separating actions from motivations is a very complex activity because it requires impassionate analysis. When a President makes a decision, he will not be able to please everybody at the same time. But what people fail to realize is that the President of the United States should act on principles, and do what he considers right independently of what polls show.

So we now have someone who does just that, behaves according to his values, and is not swishy washy as most trashy politicians that refuse to make a straight decision for fear of alienating their target demographics, and the press crucifies him daily.

The funny part is that President Bush is not running for President this time around, and still, Senator Clinton, Madam Speaker of the House, and almost every other politician cannot resist but take potshots at him.

Think for a moment if it doesn’t hurt that much. When the statistics about the Surge in Iraq came back indicating that there was a reduction in violence in Iraq, it wasn’t reported as good news.

Every time that we reached record lows unemployment over the past two years, it wasn’t reported as good news.

When the United States Economy was entering a recession at the beginning of the President Bush Presidency, it was credited to President Bush even though he had not had the time to implement economic policy dragging the economy down. That tells me that we inherited that recession from President Clinton’s term. But of course, not too many reporters will admit that.

When Sandy Berger stole the secret documents from the vault, he was given a free pass by the press and the courts. If you or me do what he did, we go to jail and the key is melted and thrown in the middle of the ocean.

Extremist Muslims are killing people all over the world. Communists are taking people hostage in Central and South America torturing them, and holding them for ransom. Some are lucky and released, most, are killed.

Drug cartels kidnap and kill Americans almost daily; specially in the border with Mexico.

Two Border Patrol Agents remain in jail, now for more than a year, for shooting at a drug dealer who was trying to come into the United States illegally, and loaded with drugs. I thought that the people who try to stop drug dealers and criminals are heroes, not criminals; they should not be in jail. I still do not understand why our politicians, with the exception of Tancredo and a handful, do not do something about it. Are we in Russia, a banana republic, or the United States?

Now, for many years, when Rush Limbaugh, Shawn Hannity, Mark Levin, Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter, Glenn Beck and many other conservative talk show hosts attack the Democrats, they have being labeled the whip of the Republican Party, or the suck ups of the Republican Party, or party hacks.

Over the past few months, these same talk show hosts and hostesses have being true to their convictions and criticized the Republican Party. And what does the press do? They called them irrelevant; they trash their reputations.

Consistently I’ve heard those same talk show hosts and hostesses criticize not only the Democrat Party, but also the Republican Party. That, I call OBJECTIVITY.

I don’t claim to be a journalist, or anything like that. But, like Glenn Beck likes to say: “I’m a thinker”. I think that the true American Thinkers are a concerned bunch. We are Patriots that belief in the Constitution of this Glorious Nation of ours. We also belief, like Laura Ingraham, that the power is in the hands of the people. Those same people addressed by the first three words of the Constitution:” We the people…”

We, the people of the United States, belief that is time for our politicians to stop pandering to the crowds. That is time for the politicians to recognize that we are their bosses and not the other way around. That is time that the press reports the news as objectively as possible, and if they are to project their opinion, that for goodness sake, do the appropriate disclaimer.

Think, understand, be impartial, those should be the first three qualifications of any reporter. Do not try to tell me what to think. Give me the information, allow me to digest it, and make my own mind. Then I will respect you.

Dumb politicians and the people that follow them…

Dumb politicians and the people that follow them…

Baseball, Steroids, Senators, and inanity…

I know that steroids are illegal and that the law prohibits their use unless under the care of a license physician.

That I know, no one in baseball has died of steroid abuse, dozens however have died of steroid abuse related causes in the wrestling industry and their deaths are documented.

I 25 in Colorado is part of the big drug corridor that brings oddly enough, drugs from Mexico, Central, and South America and distributes it all over the United States. The sad part is that almost everybody that lives near I 25 knows this. It is a secret in the open.

Do a web search on kidnappings in the border with Mexico and you should come up with more than fifty hits. There are more Americans kidnapped in or around the border with Mexico than there are American kidnappings in Baghdad. I should know since I have visited Baghdad many times.

A Congressman is found to have thousands of dollars in his freezer. Gives a new meaning to the phrase “cold hard cash”. As far as I know, that guy is not in jail. And the Democrat Party either thinks that we are morons, by ignoring this case, or they are incredibly naïve. “Google” Congressman Jefferson and you will find references to this interesting case.

Lets see… Lets see… if you open your mind, learn a bit about economics, and study the effects of tax reduction on our economy, you will see that it revitalizes it. Tax increases do the opposite. This is just an economic paradox that many politicians prefer to ignore.

Now, increased government spending increases our economic deficit.

Immigration is a weird animal because we want to be good people and good hosts to our undocumented friends. Let’s apply some common sense to this one, shall we? You walk into your house and find a bunch of strange people in your living room, what do you do? Personally, I arm myself and call the police to find out who is in my house without my permission. We have millions of people coming into our backyard; do we know whom they are? Or what they bring? I know, over 90% of them are nice honest people. But lets say that 5% are criminals. If we have 500,000 illegals breaking into our Nation’s borders a year, then we have 25,000 criminals coming through our borders every year. Does not that worry you at least a bit? Those are the scumbags that bring the drugs that kill your kids and destroy our communities.

We have dumb politicians complaining about the Marines in their cities.

We have more dumb politicians trying to impeach the President and the Vice President. What can I say?

Cindy Sheehan went to Egypt of all places to defend the rights of the people who gladly stone women to death for wearing a colored scarf or make up. Wait; isn’t she lobbying for human rights? And are not women humans?

What gives? Our politicians are either blind, dumb, naïve, or with all due respect stupid. Unless you are using binary code, one plus one is two. Come on people, WAKE UP.

Jay Leno said a few weeks back that we get the government we deserve. And yes he was right.

I am a conservative. If you are a Democrat, I respect your right to choose your own path. But for goodness sake, chose your politicians well, based on their policies.

Now, remember the one plus one equals two? Well, in binary code 1+1=10. Ask any math or computer genius. Politicians are masters of double talk so you need to be able to find out when they are pulling your leg.

If I promise you that I will fix the economy, then ask the basic questions:

1. If a balanced Nation’s budget is defined as Total Revenue-Total expenses = or > than $1.00, then politicians promises should follow this same equation. All projected expenses and Government Programs and Foreign Aid should be equal or less than the expected revenues. Thus, if Senator Obama say that we will improve our economy, but promises to increase government spending on new programs and promises to spend Billions abroad, that really does not makes sense.
2. If a small scale version of Hillary Care or socialized medicine failed in California because they couldn’t afford it, how does she believes that it will work when has being proven that it does not work in all socialist countries and our Nation simply cannot afford it?
3. Immigration; anyone who tells you that our Nation can afford thousands of illegal immigrants without stopping them and verifying whether they are decent people or criminals, is someone whom you cannot trust to protect our sovereignty, our people, nor our Nation.
4. When you see politicians that talk about the immorality of earmarks in Government spending, and they do not disclose theirs, should we really trust them? In other words, Senator Obama, come clean about your projects earmarks.
5. When they tell you that they are for change, then, realize that change is good as long as it is for the better, you ask how exactly the change is going to happen, how we are going to pay for it, and they give you a straight answer.
6. When you see politicians grandstanding on TV trying to find out the reason why rain drops fall down instead of up, is time to send them all packing and get new ones.

The “straight talk express”, the “audacity of hope”, and whatever is Senator Clinton’s slogan mean nothing as long as they can not stabilize the economy, protect our Nation, and enforce our sovereignty.
